How to Make a Matcha Latte at Home

Want to make a matcha at home but can’t get over the earthy flavor? Here’s the basics for my matcha mornings!

I LOVE matcha! Like LOVE LOVE LOVE it. And I LOVE that it’s another tool in my healing from cancer toolbox! It’s been a staple in my morning routine for a few years now, even before I got diagnosed with cancer, but now it’s all the more important.

When it’s sweater weather outside, I enjoy a warm cup. When the sun’s blazing hot, I chill out with an iced matcha latte. And either temp, I jazz it up to my tastebuds’ approval with Ceylon cinnamon, vanilla, 1 drop of raw honey, and unsweetened nut milk (all ingredients organic to lower the toxic burden on my body).

Here’s what I do to make a matcha latte with a flavor I appreciate:

1. Use organic ceremonial matcha powder. Since matcha is the entire green tea leaf ground up, we get all that comes with it and we don’t want any pesticides invading our soothing beverage ritual! Ceremonial is a higher grade than culinary matcha which means we’ll get a fuller, less bitter, flavor.

2. Make the matcha in a small bowl. It helps get everything blended well (especially if using a matcha whisk). I use 1 tsp matcha powder, a few dashes Ceylon cinnamon, and either a dash nutmeg or a turmeric blend as my basic foundation to any matcha I make. Nobody wants to sip gritty powder so put the dry ingredients in the bowl, add a little of the hot 170-180* F water to whisk well. You do NOT want boiling water as that will burn the matcha.

3. After whisking, add 1/8 tsp liquid vanilla and a few drops honey to taste. Pour the well blended liquid mixture into your mug and top with your frothed milk of choice. I use plant based milks and have noticed different flavors in the matcha latte become more apparent depending on the milk used.

The summary is to put the matcha powder, cinnamon, and whatever other spices you use in a small bowl. Add hot, but not boiling, water and whisk well. Then add your vanilla and pour it all into a mug. Top with warm milk and enjoy your matcha latte. If you find you need a bit of sweetener, use a quick drip of honey. Start small and add more if needed. Give yourself permission to play around with the ingredients to find what works best for your palate. Don’t give up on matcha after 1 or 2 times! Take a sec to figure out what it is you might not like about it and work to change that aspect of the drink.
